Entre o formulário ítalo-português e a experiência do ilusionismo arquitetônico na América portuguesa

Abstract

Este estudo pretende evidenciar a importância da simulação arquitetônica entre Portugal e o Brasil durante grande parte dos séculos XVIII e o primeiro quartel do XIX. Nossa preocupação não é especificamente com Portugal, mas sim sua empreitada decorativa no Brasil Colônia. As tipologias dos tetos pintados no mundo luso-brasileiro são diversas e merecem um estudo individualizado, bem aprofundado e com uma metodologia interdisciplinar. As decorações vão desde os caixotões com cenas hagiográficas, os brutescos com cenas figurativas numa dinâmica planimétrica, até a ilusão de arquiteturas construídas, a partir de costruções perspécticos que envolvem o tema central no cimo do suporte. Outro aspecto eram os chamados complementos ou acessórios como o douramento e a pintura a fingir materiais nobres. Tudo isso numa valente elaboração decorativa que apresenta seu formulário desde alguns motivos italianos, filtrados por uma cultura artística portuguesa e que criará raízes no Brasil Colonial entre Norte, Nordeste e Sudeste com especificidades espetaculares. As falsas arquiteturas é um dos campos mais propícios para pesquisas da História da Arte e merecem um olhar atento.

This study aims to highlight the importance of architectural simulation between Portugal and Brazil during much of the 18th century and the first quarter of the 19th century. My focus here is not specifically Portugal, but rather the Portuguese decorative programme in colonial Brazil. The diverse typologies of painted ceilings in the Luso-Brazilian world require a focused, in-depth and interdisciplinary approach. Decorations include coffers with hagiographic scenes, ¿grotesche¿ with figurative planimetric scenes, and illusory architecture based on perspective constructions around the central theme. Regarding the decoration of interiors, there were the so-called ¿accessories¿ or ¿complements¿ such as gilding and the simulation of costly materials such as marble. All of this constituted a bold decorative scheme that featured Italian motifs filtered through Portuguese artistic culture; this decorative scheme created roots in colonial Brazil (in the North, Northeast and Southeast regions) and developed spectacularly unique features. Illusory architecture is one of the most promising fields in Art History, requiring the trained eye of the science historian as well as the expertise of the art historian.
