Publication: Orality as Object. The Material Life of Philippine Metrical Romances and its Depiction of Women

| dc.description.abstract | The Philippine corrido reached the apex of its popularity in the 19th century as the bestseller of its day. However, intellectuals who considered literature a source of national identity found these long verse narratives too fantastic, sentimental, religious, and didactic—too colonial. This paper complicates rigidly held binaries rooted in the supposed differences between the colonial/colonized and insists on their continuities by looking at the corrido’s material life vis-a-vis simultaneous social transformations. It provides an account of its circulation as oral tradition, print, and theater performance. It also reads in the corrido the Filipino worldviews of the period—the depictive, the delusional, and the desired. Concretely, Bikol corridos are examined to show how, within the same texts, they inscribe the gender ideology of the period, rationalize such ideology, and undermine or imagine alternatives to it. | |
| dc.description.abstract | El corrido filipino alcanzó la cima de su popularidad en el siglo XIX como el bestseller de su época. Sin embargo, los intelectuales que consideraban la literatura una fuente de identidad nacional encontraban estas largas narrativas en verso demasiado fantásticas, sentimentales, religiosas y didácticas, demasiado coloniales. Este artículo cuestiona los binarios rígidamente arraigados en las supuestas diferencias entre el colonizador y el colonizado, e insiste en sus continuidades al examinar la vida material del corrido frente a las transformaciones sociales simultáneas. Ofrece un relato de su circulación como tradición oral, impresa y representada en el teatro. También lee en el corrido las cosmovisiones filipinas de la época: lo representativo, lo delirante y lo deseado. Concretamente, se examinan los corridos bicolanos para mostrar cómo, dentro de los mismos textos, inscriben la ideología de género de la época, racionalizan dicha ideología y la socavan o imaginan alternativas a ella. | |
