Abstract

The Philippine corrido reached the apex of its popularity in the 19th century as the bestseller of its day. However, intellectuals who considered literature a source of national identity found these long verse narratives too fantastic, sentimental, religious, and didactic—too colonial. This paper complicates rigidly held binaries rooted in the supposed differences between the colonial/colonized and insists on their continuities by looking at the corrido’s material life vis-a-vis simultaneous social transformations. It provides an account of its circulation as oral tradition, print, and theater performance. It also reads in the corrido the Filipino worldviews of the period—the depictive, the delusional, and the desired. Concretely, Bikol corridos are examined to show how, within the same texts, they inscribe the gender ideology of the period, rationalize such ideology, and undermine or imagine alternatives to it.
