El arquitecto novohispano Francisco Antonio Guerrero y Torres entre la brujería y la hechicería durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII

Abstract

A partir de un caso de magia y hechicería ocurrido en la Ciudad de México y contenido en el Archivo General de la Nación de México dentro del ramo Inquisición, que involucra a uno de los arquitectos más famosos de Nueva España, Francisco Antonio Guerrero y Torres, se desentrañarán aspectos importantes por medio de diversos puntos tanto de carácter histórico, social y cultural, que nos ayudarán a entender el comportamiento ideológico de la sociedad novohispana durante el último tercio del siglo XVIII. Al mismo tiempo, tanto este caso como la documentación analizada en él, nos permitirá seguir comprendiendo la tradición de estas artes oscuras en su incorporación colectiva en la comunidad, así como también entender al Santo Oficio de México como institución y su labor de mediación en la integración cultural de la población de este virreinato.

From a case of magic and sorcery that occurred in Mexico City and contained in the General Archive of the Nation of Mexico within the Inquisition branch, which involves one of the most famous architects of New Spain, Francisco Antonio Guerrero y Torres, Important aspects will be unraveled through various aspects both of a historical, social and cultural nature, which will help us to understand the ideological behavior of New Spain’s society during the last third of the 18th century. At the same time, both this case and the documentation analyzed in it, it will allow us to continue to understand the tradition of these dark arts in their collective incorporation into the community as well as to understand the Holy Office of Mexico as an institution and its mediation work in the cultural integration of the population of this viceroyalty.
