El Señor de Malta. Partida y regreso de un crucificado dramático pintado por el demonio.

Abstract

A finales del siglo XVIII un expresionista y sangriento crucificado bajo la advocación de Cristo de Malta, fue objeto de múltiples copias anónimas en pintura y escultura. Las dispares leyendas en torno a su origen y su difusión más allá de la cordillera andina han dificultado sucesivamente su investigación. El presente estudio pretende desvelar los orígenes italianos y centroeuropeos de este Crucificado doloroso, formando parte de una dilatada historia con raíces en el Medievo. Paralelamente se analizan las circunstancias en las que apareció esta iconografía cristífera vinculada a las epidemias o la evangelización y cuestionada o divulgada por la propia Contrarreforma.

At the end of the 18th century, an expressionist and bloody crucifixion scene dedicated to the Christ of Malta was the subject of multiple anonymous copies in painting and sculpture. The dissimilar legends surrounding its origin and its diffusion beyond the Andes mountain range have hindered its research. The present study attempts to reveal the Italian and Central European origins of this agonizing crucifixion, part of a long history with roots in the Middle Ages. Concurrently, it analyzes the circumstances in which this Christian iconography appeared linked to epidemics or evangelization, and was questioned or divulged by the Counter-Reformation itself.
