Abstract
The aim of this research is to study how nursing assistants define the role of emotional caregivers in nursing homes. A qualitative study was carried out with interviews with seven auxiliary workers in six publicly nursing homes, owned and managed by the Junta de Andalucía. The biomedical paradigm, predominant in long-term care facilities, is questioned in a number of studies for not taking into account other key factors for resident health, such as respect for their individuality, the construction of meaningful relationships within the centre, personal care, and the home environment. The relationship with staff would have an effect on resident health and quality of care. Using the interactionist approach proposed by Erving Goffman and Arlie Hochschild, it is concluded that the role of emotional caregiver is developed in an institutional framework governed by the criteria of productivity and accountability; and it is found that the emotional caregiving strategies described by the aides reduce the resident's self-esteem and status.
