La clave está en el herrero: artesanado local y robos de obras de arte y de útiles de trabajo en Quito durante los siglos XVII y XVIII

Abstract

Un tema de interés para la historia social del arte es el referido a conductas delictivas por parte de ciertos artesanos, y particularmente los robos de obras de arte. En este trabajo, hacemos un estudio de casos sobre este asunto centrado en Quito en los siglos XVII y XVIII. Los sujetos de este estudio son herreros y cerrajeros, artífices que tenían mayor capacidad de trabajar el metal y que, en el caso de la planificación de un latrocinio, eran más apropiados para forzar cerraduras. Ya fueran ellos los ladrones, ya contratados por otros, varios herreros aparecen en la documentación de la sección Criminales del Archivo Nacional del Ecuador como acusados por robo. Analizamos varios expedientes que permiten comprobar el papel que jugaron en diversos robos, y las relaciones que mantenían con otros artesanos de la ciudad, ya fuera como compinches, como víctimas o como testigos.

A matter of interest for the social history of art is the one referring to criminal behavior by certain artisans, and particularly the theft of works of art. In this chapter, we make a case study on this topic focused on Quito in the 17th and 18th centuries. The subjects of this study are blacksmiths and locksmiths, craftsmen who had a greater capacity for metal and who, in the case of planning a robbery, were more suitable for picking locks. Whether they were the thieves, or hired by others, several blacksmiths appear in the documentation of the Criminales section of the Archivo Nacional de Ecuador as accused of theft. Several files are studied that allow verifying the role they played in several robberies, and the relationships they had with other artisans in the city, either as cronies, as victims or as witnesses.
