Diego Ibáñez Pacheco y el claustro de la catedral de Mondoñedo (1636-1640)

Abstract

En 1636 la Iglesia de Mondoñedo decidió renovar el claustro de la catedral que databa del siglo XIII. La iniciativa se debió al prelado Antonio de Valdés, quien rubricó el contrato de la obra siendo obispo electo de Oviedo. El arquitecto encargado de trazarlo y edificarlo resultó Diego Ibáñez Pacheco. Este cántabro afincado en Galicia dirigió la construcción hasta 1640. En el presente trabajo analizaremos la morfología del claustro medieval, los motivos de la reforma, el diseño del nuevo edificio, su proceso constructivo, el estilo y las referencias artísticas que pudieron inspirarlo, así como sus usos y funciones. También trataremos los modelos claustrales que Ibáñez Pacheco difundió por las antiguas provincias de Lugo y Mondoñedo.

In 1636 the Church of Mondoñedo decided to renovate the cloister of the Cathedral, dated in the 13th century. The initiative was due to the Prelate Antonio de Valdés, who signed the contract of the work being Bishop-elect of Oviedo. The architect in charge of designing and building it was Diego Ibáñez Pacheco. This Cantabrian settled in Galicia directed the construction until 1640. In this paper we will analyse the morphology of the medieval cloister, the reasons for the reform, the design of the new building, its construction process, the style and the artistic references that could have inspired it, as well as its uses and functions. We will also deal with the cloister models that Ibáñez Pacheco spread throughout the old provinces of Lugo and Mondoñedo.
