Mulheres na literatura brasileira: o corpo como território de memória em Ponciá Vicêncio

Abstract

O propósito do capítulo é apresentar uma leitura crítica do romance Ponciá Vicêncio (2003), de Conceição Evaristo, mostrando como é construída, pela linguagem, a relação entre memória, corpo e violência. O romance descreve a trajetória de Ponciá Vicêncio desde sua infância até a idade adulta, revelando, com intensa força poética, suas percepções de mundo, seus sonhos e desencantos, suas relações afetivas e seus envolvimentos familiares. Em nossa análise, procuramos apontar para o modo como o narrador cria uma visão empática em reação à personagem protagonista, mulher negra e periférica, e sua história de vida; como a violência social e de gênero nos é apresentada; como a voz narrativa constrói uma relação fragmentária e não linear entre passado e presente e futuro; como o romance discute a questão identitária, a herança cultural e a relação que podemos estabelecer entre a narrativa, nosso passado de escravidão colonial e reflexões sobre a sociedade brasileira contemporânea.

The purpose of the chapter is to present a critical reading of the novel Ponciá Vicencio (2003), by Conceição Evaristo, showing how the relationship between memory, body and violence is constructed through language. The novel describes Ponciá Vicencio’s trajectory from childhood to adulthood, revealing, with intense poetic force, her perceptions of the world, her dreams and disillusions, her affective relationships, and her family ties. In our analysis, we seek to point out to the way in which the narrator creates an empathetic vision in reaction to the main character and her life story; how social and gender violence is presented to us; how the narrative voice builds a fragmentary and non-linear relationship between past, present, and future; how the novel discusses the issue of identity, cultural heritage, and the relationship we can establish between the narrative, our colonial past of slavery, and reflections on contemporary Brazilian society.
