Ilusão espacial em Portugal. Quadratura e azulejaria no encalce de uma arquitetura imaginária

Abstract

Perseguindo o fenómeno da ilusão espacial no contexto da produção barroca portuguesa, e orientado o discurso em função dos modos empregues na conformação de um espaço visual, visa-se relacionar as experiências quadraturistas empreendidas na primeira metade do século XVIII em Portugal com a produção azulejar coeva. Neste âmbito exploram-se mecanismos empregues na persecução de uma desejada ilusão espacial, respondendo a ensejos da cultura imagética e espacial do Barroco português, que, apesar de prática quadraturista e azulejar operarem a partir de suportes e técnicas de representação distintas, revelam na sua essência um mesmo recurso científico, nomeadamente a aplicação da perspetiva.

Pursuing the phenomenon of the spatial illusion in the context of the Portuguese Baroque production, and orienting the discourse according to the methods used in the conformation of a visual space, we aim to intertwine the quadratura experiences undertaken in the first half of the 18th century in Portugal, with the coeval tile production. In this context, the mechanisms employed in the pursuit of a desired spatial illusion are explored, responding to the opportunities of the Portuguese Baroque¿s imagery and spatial culture, which, despite the quadratura and tile practice operating since different supports and representation techniques, reveal in their essence the same scientific resource, particularly the application of the linear perspective.
