Abstract

This essay analyses various paintings by Juan de Valdés Leal depicting different episodes from the Passion of Christ, relating them to two of the most representative elements of Sevillian culture at the time they were made: devotion and theatre. Both are also combined in the various penitential celebrations that were deeply established in Sevillian society in the 17th century, such as Holy Week and the Stations of the Cross, suggesting a possible artistic permeability between these festivities and the pictorial representations.
