Abstract
Casta painting is an 18th century pictorial genre that developed in New Spain as a means to display the miscegenation process of its inhabitants through series of paintings. Although information regarding the conditions of commission and reception of this type of painting is scarce, there is a certain consensus on the idea that they were thought of as export goods, which meant an opportunity for New Spanish painters to offer a sample of their talent to the world. This study focuses on the interests of the painters of these series, an aspect that has received little attention from historians despite the possibilities offered by a genre that was new, profane, and American.
