Plagio y autoría en las obras de Shakespeare traducidas por R. Martínez Lafuente

Abstract

R. Martínez Lafuente publicó en el primer cuarto del siglo XX la colección más completa hasta entonces de obras de Shakespeare en castellano. Dicha colección comprende 35 dramas, traducidos, según se ha venido afirmando, a partir de versiones francesas y publicados en doce tomos sin fecha. Pese a que brinde la primera versión castellana de uno de los dramas de Shakespeare, y a que haya alcanzado una popularidad considerable, son pocos los datos que se han ofrecido hasta el momento sobre la colección y su traductor. En este artículo se revisan tales datos y se presentan evidencias que, por un lado, permiten determinar de manera fehaciente la fecha de publicación de las traducciones y, por otro, sacan a la luz problemas de autoría y demuestran que la inmensa mayoría de las traducciones no partían de versiones francesas, sino que plagiaban versiones españolas anteriores.Plagiarism and autorship in Shakespeare's works translated into Spanish by R. Martínez Lafuente In the first quarter of the 20th century, R. Martínez Lafuente published the, until then, most comprehensive collection of Shakespeare’s works in Spanish. This collection includes 35 plays translated, according to current literature on the subject, from French versions and published in twelve undated volumes. Although it offers the first Spanish version of one of Shakespeare’s plays, and it has reached significant popularity, little data has been provided up to the present time regarding the collection and its author. In this article I review this data and present evidence that, on the one hand, allows us to determine reliably the date of publication of the translations and, on the other hand, brings authorship problems to light and demonstrates that the vast majority of the translations were not based on French versions but instead plagiarised earlier Spanish versions.
