Un paisaje simbólico: santos, arpías y unicornios en el belén

Abstract

La representación barroca del nacimiento de Cristo se ubicaba en un paisaje simbólico caracterizado como un desierto para mostrar la soledad en que este tuvo lugar. Paisaje y figuras respondían a la misma forma y mensaje, la historia de la salvación y de la redención. Sobre la escenografía se disponían, junto a las escenas evangélicas del Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento, las figuras de santos penitentes, como san Jerónimo, san Juan Bautista o santa María Magdalena, ermitaños y una serie de animales, algunos de ellos exóticos y otros fantásticos, como las arpías y los unicornios, a modo de símbolos cristológicos, representaciones del triunfo del bien sobre el mal y ejemplos morales de conducta, que contribuían a sugerir que el paisaje recreado no era habitual.

The Baroque representation of the birth of Christ was set in a symbolic landscape characterized as a desert to show the solitude in which it took place. Landscape and figures responded to the same form and message, the story of salvation and redemption. Alongside the Gospel scenes from the Old and New Testaments, the scenery included the figures of penitent saints such as Saint Jerome, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Mary Magdalene, hermits and a series of animals, some of them exotic and others fantastic, such as harpies and unicorns, as Christological symbols. They were representations of the triumph of Good over Evil and moral examples of conduct, which helped to suggest that the recreated landscape was unusual.
