Abstract
This article presents a study on the voices of families facing social and economic vulnerability, aiming to: (i) analyze the life trajectories of families in situations of social and economic vulnerability; (ii) characterize families in situations of social and economic vulnerability, based on the voices of the actors; (iii) understand the relationship between the vulnerability of families and the academic success of children; (iv) identify relevant mechanisms to prevent and/or overcome different social and economic vulnerabilities. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative methodology was chosen, using semi-structured interviews conducted according to a specially designed script as a data collection technique. Content analysis was used to analyze the collected data. The study involved the participation of five families, represented by their mothers, from different municipalities in the Bragança District, in northeastern Portugal. The results revealed that the families face vulnerabilities related to marital separation, long-term unemployment, health problems, and economic difficulties. Low maternal education and/or the father's lack of involvement in marital life can be factors that influence children's school performance, because the mother is prevented from providing support in studies and the father is mostly absent. The presence of an older sibling emerges as a factor that contributes to the younger sibling's academic success.
