Do poder e da arte: o palácio dos Castilho e Távora em terras de Ribacôa

Abstract

O palácio dos Castilho e Távora, edificado c. de 1743, situado em Almendra, terras de Ribacôa, norte de Portugal, é herdeiro de uma história familiar com- plexa, que se confunde não só com a história da organização e administração do território onde se insere, mas também com a de Portugal. Possibilitada a sua construção pela união, por via matrimonial, de duas das mais influentes famílias do Antigo Regime, os Castilho e os Távora, a monumental edificação marca a paisagem de Almendra e de toda a região, revelando na sua imponência arquitetónica, no aparato decorativo dos seus símbolos heráldicos e nos seus faustosos interiores, a influência e poder das famílias que nele habitaram. O presente estudo aborda a história daquela família e de como a mesma contribuiu para a defesa militar de uma região fronteiriça vulnerável às invasões da vizinha Espanha. Os cargos régios com que foram sucessiva- mente agraciados, o real poder que detinham na região e a imensa fortuna que acumularam refletem-se no palácio, objeto primeiro deste estudo. Com recurso aos arquivos de família, pela primeira vez aqui apresentados e ex- plorados e a outros fundos documentais, revela-se uma história complexa e rica e desmistificam-se algumas ideias feitas em torno da construção do palácio e da sua história.

The palace of Castilho and Távora, built c. 1743, located in Almendra, lands of Ribacôa, northern Portugal, is heir to a complex family history, which is intert- wined not only with the history of the organization and administration of the territory where it is located, but also with that of Portugal. Made possible by the union, through marriage of two members of the most influential families of the Ancien Régime, the Castilho and the Távora, the monumental building marks the landscape of Almendra and the entire region, revealing in its architectural gran- deur, in the decorative apparatus from its heraldic symbols and its sumptuous interiors, the influence and power of the families that inhabited it. This study addresses the history of that family and how it contributed to the military defense of a border region vulnerable to invasions from Spain. The royal positions with which they were successively granted, the real power they held in the region and the wealth they accumulated are reflected in the palace, the primary object of this study. Using family archives, presented and explored for the first time, and other archival sources, a complex and rich history is revealed and some ideas made around the construction of the palace and its history are demystified.
