Abstract

La colonia de comerciantes ingleses adquirió notable relevancia en Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz), durante los siglos XVI y XVII, al calor del desarrollo comercial impulsado por los duques de Medina Sidonia y porque en la ciudad, antepuerto de Sevilla, se terminaba de aprestar la flota de Indias. La fundación del colegio-hospital de San Jorge, permitió la concreción de un notable espacio de representación colectiva y de adoctrinamiento católico, al quedar finalmente asociada a la Compañía de Jesús como seminario de ingleses e irlandeses para la evangelización de las Islas Británicas.

The colony of English merchants acquired remarkable relevance in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cadiz), during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to the heat of the commercial development driven by the dukes of Medina Sidonia and because in the city, foreport of Seville, the Indian fleet was finished. The foundation of the college-hospital of San Jorge, allowed the realization of a remarkable space of collective representation and Catholic indoctrination, by finally becoming associated with the Society of Jesus as a seminary of English and Irish for the evangelization of the British Isles.
