Comedia de santos
San Luis Beltrán
The plays composed at the light of the official acts for the acknowledgment of sainthood, staged not only the existential milestones of the saint but also his very quality of admirable. The basic aim was to move the affections of the audience in order to inspire a mirroring admiration for the character. This aesthetic procedure derived from an understanding of sainthood as a representable virtue with an exemplar meaning which could be easily conveyed through baroque theatricality. This is shown in two plays about San Luis Beltrán, composed when the saint was beatified in 1608 and canonized in 1671.
