Both within and beyond the church setting these miniatures, in contrast to the plain chant, lengthy prayers, readings or highly rhetorical sermons, enriched religious celebrations, spreading theological lessons through the emotional link evoked by the popular form¿s text and music. The musical corpus conserved in the Historical Archive of the Bogotá Cathedral houses a considerable collection of villancicos copied between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some examples of the stylistic traits of this collection allow us to understand the role that these pieces played in the devotional soundscape of Viceregal Bogotá at the same time that they underscore the importance of the literary and musical inheritance that these pieces bring forth.El género poético-musical del villancico, valiéndose de su original sabor profano y ritmos vivaces, será dispuesto en el Barroco como paradigma de los textos sacros cantados en lengua romance en el territorio hispánico. Dentro y a la margen de los templos eclesiásticos, contrastando con el canto llano, las extensas oraciones, lecturas o los retóricos sermones, estas miniaturas ensalzaban las celebraciones religiosas, transmitiendo los mensajes teológicos a través de la vinculación afectiva evocada por envolventes textos y músicas. El corpus musical conservado en el Archivo Histórico de la Catedral de Bogotá alberga una considerable colección de villancicos copiados entre los siglos XVII y XVIII.
