El centro de la discusión lo constituye el debate sobre los conceptos de libertad: el negativo, adscrito al liberalismo, y la "no-dominación", invocada por los neorepublicanos. En el presente trabajo se analizan las consecuencias políticas de abordar el tema de la libertad únicamente a través de la contraposición de distintas definiciones que se presentan como incompatibles entre sí.In contemporary political theory we are witnessing an increase of adherents of republicanism, understood as an alternative discourse to a supposedly exhausted liberalism. The debate on the concepts of liberty occupies the centre of the discussion. The defence of the negative concept of liberty attributed to the liberal tradition is contested using an alternative definition of liberty as non-domination.
