With this paper I intend to demonstrate that the architecture developed by the Jesuits in the estancias of the former Jesuit Province of Paraguay was a combined work between Jesuit architects and African and Afro-descendant builders, forming what I call an “Afro-Jesuit architecture”. We fundamentally emphasize that these areas were to respond to the exclusive use of the enslaved, with three architectural typologies being built in the context of a historiography of colonial architecture in which they were excluded, such as churches for Christian worship, collective dwellings for the habitat of the users themselves, and obrajes as workplaces. We propose the reformulation of an untold story, to discover and enhance the value of an intercultural cultural heritage, between Jesuits and Africans, which developed in the territory of the former Jesuit province, today the jurisdiction of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and part of Bolivia and Brazil.application/pdfptAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 Internationalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Arquitectura afro-jesuíticaEsclavitudProvincia Jesuítica del ParaguayIglesiasViviendasObrajesAfro-Jesuit architectureSlaveryJesuit Province of ParaguayChurchesDwellingsWorksArquitetura afro-jesuítica na antiga Província do ParaguaiAfro-jesuit architecture in the ancient province of Paraguaybook partopen access
