AB Desde  la  llegada  de  los  fenicios  al  ámbito  del  Estrecho  de  Gibraltar,  distintas  culturas surcaron   el Atlántico   europeo   en   busca   de   recursos   económicos.   Cuando   Roma conquiste   sus   provincias   occidentales,   los   emperadores   romanos   utilizarán   el conocimiento  marítimo  acumulado  durante  siglos  para  mantener  el  abastecimiento  de sus  ejércitos  en  Britania  y  en  la frontera  del  Rin  desde  principios  del  siglo  I  d.C.  No conocemos esa ruta atlántica, dada la parquedad de las fuentes literarias y la escasez de vestigios  arqueológicos  subacuáticos,  conectados  entre  sí.  Sin  embargo,  el  Imperio romano   nunca   se   identificó   con   una   dimensión   atlántica,   pues   siempre   fue   una civilización  de  carácter  mediterráneo,  y  una  vez  que  su  interés  político  se  desplace  a otros territorios, a partir del siglo II d.C., las comunicaciones atlánticas decaerán
AB Since  the  arrival  of  the  Phoenicians  in  the  area  of  the  Strait  of  Gibraltar,  different cultures  crossed  the  European  Atlantic  in  search  of  economic  resources.  When  Rome conquers  its  western  provinces, theRoman  emperors  will  use  maritime  knowledge accumulated over the centuries to maintain the supply of its armies in Britain and on the Rhine  frontier,  since  the  beginning  of  the  1st  century  A.D.  We  do  not  know  that Atlantic  route,  due  to  the  paucity  of  literary  sources  and  the  scarcity  ofunderwater archaeological  remains,  connected  to  each  other.  However,  the  Roman  Empire  never identified  with  an  Atlantic  dimension.  It  was  always  a  Mediterranean  civilization,  and once  its  political  interest  moves  to  other  territories,  from  the  2nd  century  AD,  the Atlantic communications decayed
