AB El cristianismo en su creencia en una primera resurrección para aquellos que fuesen sepultados –ad sanctos– es decir, en contacto con los restos de un mártir, produce la aparición de los martyria como lugar de enterramiento, surgiendo la necesidad de la búsqueda y tráfico de reliquias para satisfacer la demanda de los centros devocionales. Estas primeras manifestaciones constituyen el núcleo de la Iglesia primitiva basada en el culto a los mártires. Con la Reforma, este culto es rechazado y la Iglesia católica con su Contrarreforma lo intensifica y busca pruebas materiales de su existencia, especialmente en Roma, lo que supone un incremento de las investigaciones con la aparición de la llamada arqueología cristiana que de una visión confesional y apologética con una fuerte dependencia teológica al servicio de la Iglesia se ha transformado en una rama de la arqueología tardo antigua sin negar el peso ideológico del cristianismo, ni el papel de la arqueología como disciplina auxiliar de la Historia Eclesiástica.
AB Christianity in its belief in a first resurrection for those who were buried –ad sanctos– that is, in contact with the remains of a martyr, produces the appearance of martyria as a burial place, arising the need for the search and trafficking of relics to meet the demand of devotional centers. These first manifestations constitute the core of the early Church based on the worship of the martyrs. With the Reformation, this cult is rejected and the Catholic Church with its Counter-Reformation intensifies it and seeks material proof of its existence, especially in Rome, which means an increase in research with the emergence of the so-called Christian archaeology which has been transformed from a confessional and apologetic vision with a strong theological dependence at the service of the Church, in a branch of late ancient archaeology without denying the ideological weight of Christianity, nor the role of archaeology as an auxiliary discipline of Ecclesiastical History.
