%X A gravura, enquanto fonte visual, foi crucialpara a construção das imagens que caracterizamo período barroco, incluindo Portugal. Umfenómeno imagético que não só apelou para areprodução pictórica das gravuras de episódiosda vida de Cristo, da Virgem Maria e dos santos,mas adoptou outras formas, mais voltadas para a dimensão individual do crente, num apelo direto à conversão do seu coração. No barroco português, uma Teologia do Coração desenvolveu-se rapidamente na pintura e foi inspirada por livros de emblemas, numa linguagem visual focada na existência do homo interior, na sua conversão e na salvação da alma.
%X Engraving as a visual source was crucial in theconstruction of the imagery that characterizedthe Baroque period, including Portugal. An imagery phenomena not only appealed to the pictorial reproduction of episodes of the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary and the Saints, but adopted other forms, more directed to the individual dimension of the believer, in a direct appeal to the conversion of his/her heart. In the context of the Portuguese Baroque, a Theology of the Heart quickly developed in painting, inspired by books of emblems, a visual language centered on the existence of the homo interior, its conversion and the salvation of the soul.
