AB Los procesos a los mártires cristianos que aparecen reflejados en el arte de diferentes épocas, conformando uno de los motivos preferentes, tienen su origen en la antigüedad clásica. En el contexto del Imperio romano se desarrollaron las persecuciones, juicios y ejecuciones que sufrieron aquellas personas según el modelo establecido por el derecho penal de esta sociedad. Sin embargo, la literatura que recogió estos acontecimientos distorsionó las informaciones hasta el punto de alterar los datos, aspecto que afectó también a las representaciones visuales, ofreciendo así unas características que se alejan de la realidad histórica. Resulta fundamental conocer cómo sucedieron verdaderamente esos procesos, así como la manera en que fueron transmitidos, para comprender ciertos rasgos de la literatura y el arte posterior.
AB Legal proceedings against Christian martyrs, which reverberate across va- rious historical periods coalescing into a prominent motif in art, can be traced back to classical antiquity. Within the context of the Roman Empire, persecutions, trials, and executions endured by such people took place in compliance with that society’s framework of criminal law. The literature regarding these events, however, tends to distort the data to the point of factual misrepresentation, which in turn has impacted visual art thereby introducing some features that depart from historical reality. It is necessary to know both what truly happened at these martyr trials, and also precisely how they were transmitted, in order to gain a good grasp of certain traits of later literature and art.
