AB En el presente artículo se exponen los rasgos esenciales de las cuatro grandes escuelas clásicas del sunismo. Tras un análisis inicial de las principales doctrina del Islam, se estudian los conceptos esenciales que de fi nen el sunismo, desde el punto de vista jurídico, como la sharî`a o el fiqh . En último lugar, tras contraponer las opiniones diversas de los partidarios de la libre opinión frente a los tradicionalistas, se de fi ende la necesidad de desarrollar un sentido más moderno del concepto de inter- pretación jurídica como herramienta necesaria de modernización de los sistemas jurídicos islámicos.
AB This work surveys the essential traits of the classic four biggest schools of Sunni Islam. After an initial analysis of the main Islamic doctrines, we proceed to study the fundamental legal criteria that de fi ne Sunni Islam, like sharia or fiqh . The diverse points of view of the supporters of the Freedom of thought are also put in contrast with those of the traditionalist scholars and, as a conclusion, we advocate to develop a more contemporary meaning of the notion of legal interpretation as a necessary tool for modernizing the Islamic legal systems.
