AB El Concilio de Trento había dado lugar en el mundo católico a una exaltación del sacramento de la Eucaristía como respuesta a las consideraciones de la Reforma protestante. Dicha exaltación, que coincide con el dominio español sobre la Nueva Granada, encontraría su apogeo en el siglo XVIII y fue acompañado de la elaboración de un gran número de custodias, que la liturgia permitía exponer ante el pueblo, especialmente en las procesiones del Corpus Christi. Esta manifestación dio lugar a la elaboración de piezas de muy diferentes categorías de acuerdo con las posibilidades de cada lugar, pues se pueden encontrar desde piezas sencillas y populares a las vistosas custodias bogotanas y payanesas. Por lo general, en casi todas ellas destacó el uso de las esmeraldas como piedra preciosa ornamental, cuya producción se obtenía en la propia jurisdicción de la Nueva Granada.

NO The Council of Trent gave rise in the Catholic world to an exaltation of the sacrament of the Eucharist as a response to the considerations of the Protestant Reform. This exaltation, which coincides with the Spanish gaining control over New Granada, would reach its peak in the 18th century and was accompanied by the creation of a great number of monstrances that the liturgy permitted to be shown to the congregation, in particular during the processions of Corpus Christi. This gave rise to the elaboration of pieces of greatly differing quality, in accordance with the possibilities of each parish. We can find pieces that range from the simplest popular pieces to the ornate monstrances of Bogotá and of Popayán. The outstanding characteristic of almost all of them was the use of emeralds as an ornamental gemstone, produced within the jurisdiction of New Granada itself.
