It seeks to show the development of this field since its early years until the verge of its recent burgeoning. Therefore, it is mostly organised chronologically and extends from the 1960s to the early 2000s. Together with a later article dealing with the last decade, it will provide a comprehensive overview of what was once a neglected field but is not so anymore.
