%X Las catástrofes que han asolado a El Salvador no solo han puesto enevidencia la vulnerabilidad social de su población sino también lade la imaginación de sus escritores, pintores y músicos. Erupcionesvolcánicas, terremotos, inundaciones pestes y guerras han moldeadoel carácter de esa sociedad que, sin embargo, parece vivir en una especiede ¿adormecimiento¿ ante su propia historia. Su misma posicióngeográfica se encuentra en el origen de algunas de sus tragedias.Es difícil entender a El Salvador y a Centroamérica sin relacionarloscon esa condición geopolítica y con las lógicas imperiales que hansocavado su soberanía y moldeado sus identidades. El autor repasauna serie de eventos catastróficos ocurridos en ese territorio, desdela antigu¿edad hasta nuestros días, para concluir que la ausencia derepresentaciones simbólicas altamente elaboradas, provenientes delarte y la literatura, ha limitado que la sociedad salvadoreña interioricela catástrofe y se prepare para hacerle frente.
%X The natural catastrophes that have impacted El Salvador have unwrappedthe social vulnerability of its population, as well as the imaginationof Salvadoran writers, painters and musicians. However, Salvadoransseem to live unaware that volcano eruptions, earthquakes, plagues, warsand floods have shaped the character of Salvadoran society. The originof some tragedies in the country lie on its geographic zone. It is hard tounderstand El Salvador and its neighbors in Central America, withoutunderstanding the geopolitical atmosphere, and the imperial dynamicsthat have undermined its sovereignty and forged its identity. The authorgoes through a number of catastrophic events from back in the days until the present to demonstrate the absence of highly refined symbolic representation,which come from the arts and literature. The absence of theseelements, according to the author, has limited Salvadoran society from internalizingcatastrophes and prepare them to react promptly to adversities.
