AB Rafael Altamira y Crevea (1866-1959) fue un historiador del Derecho que contribuyó al desarrollo del Derecho internacional en su calidad de Juez del Tribunal Permanente de Justicia Internacional (TPJI), entre 1921 y 1939. En este contexto, el estudio trata del discurso renovador de Altamira recurriendo a la historia de la civilización española y recuperando los principios promovidos por los teólogos y juristas españoles del siglo XVI. Altamira concibió el Derecho como un "instrumento civilizador", un elemento crucial para demostrar el carácter civilizado del pueblo español y el papel civilizador de España, en particular en América. La participación de Altamira en la creación de las instituciones internacionales demuestra su interés por promover la idea de España como "nación civilizada" en la sociedad internacional.
AB Rafael Altamira y Crevea (1866-1951) was a legal historianwho contributed to the development of international law in his capacityas a judge at the Permanent Court of International Justice (PCIJ) from1921 till 1939. In this context, the discourse of the renewal of what Altamira saw as the Spanish history of civilization, drawing on the principles of the Spanish theologians and jurists of the 16th Century,will be examined. Altamira considered law as a "civilizing instrument", acrucial element in demonstrating the civilized character of Spanishpeople and Spain's civilizing role, particularly in America. Altamira's participation in the setting up of international institutions reveals hisinterest in promoting the idea of Spain as a civilized nation in international society.
