AB Gracias a las Misiones, los jesuitas desarrollaron en América una actividad donde resultó esencial observar al otro y documentar sus prácticas y su relación con el ambiente, generando importantes testimonios escritos y visuales. En la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, las obras publicadas de los misioneros Joseph Gumilla y Philippo Gilij sobre el Orinoco, establecieron un diálogo entre el pensamiento ilustrado y la visualidad barroca. A través de las imágenes impresas y de la relación con el texto escrito, la presente investigación plantea cómo una espiritualidad ejercitada a través de la experiencia permitió transmitir escenarios de contacto etnográfico que tuvieron una repercusión para la comunidad intelectual de la época.

NO Thanks to the Missions, the Jesuits developed an activity in America where observe others and document their practices and their relationship with the environment was essential. During the second half of the 18th century, the published works of the missionaries Joseph Gumilla and Philippo Gilij about the Orinoco established a dialogue between enlightened thought and baroque visuality. Through the printed images and the relationship with the written text, this research analyzes how spirituality exercised through experience allowed the transmission of ethnographic contact scenarios that had an impact on the intellectual community of that time.
