AB La incansable referencia a los orígenes del cristianismo en Andalucía durante la época romana, y el culto a los mártires locales de este periodo, será una constante en la Andalucía de la Edad Moderna. Con el fin de justificar, ideológicamente, el establecimiento de una nueva sociedad tras la Reconquista, se buscaron, tanto en el subsuelo como en la documentación, a los precursores del catolicismo en estas tierras del sur de España. Junto a este proceso, y con el mismo argumento, también vemos como se tratará de fomentar nuevas devociones de este periodo. Así sucede en Alhaurín el Grande. Cuando la sensibilidad Barroca tocaba a su fin llegaban, desde Roma, y por concesión especial del Papa Pío VI a Diego Fernández de Medina, un sacerdote de la localidad, las reliquias de San Gaudencio. Veamos cómo se incorporaron a la ya larga lista de devociones locales.
AB The reference to the origins of Christianity during Roman times, and the cult of martyrs will be a constant in Andalusia during the Modern Age. In order to justify the establishment of a new society after the Reconquest, precedents of catholicism in these lands of southern Spain were tirelessly searched. With the same ideological justification, some eclesiastic will try to promote, also, new devotions of this period. This is the case of Alhaurín el Grande. A town where the relics of Saint Gaudencio martyr arrived, about 1790, from the Catacombs of Pontiano, in Rome. Granted by Pope Pius VI to Diego Fernández de Medina, a native priest of the town, this devotion roots among its inhabi- tants when the Baroque spirituality was finishing.
