%X Este trabajo tiene como propósito correlacionar textos e imágenes del siglo XVI novohispano, cuyo eje temático es la férrea condena a las actividades conceptualizadas como pecados carnales. Para ello, analizaré el concepto de pecado, desde la óptica de los textos del siglo XVI, tales como doctrinas y catecismos, fuentes documentales estrechamente relacionadas con las imágenes del arte indígena cristiano en las que abundan representaciones visuales condenando a los pecados de la carne, principalmente a la lujuria y la sodomía, actividades que eran castigadas con el destino final más terrible: los tormentos del infierno. Discutiré la importancia que la iglesia daba al cuerpo como fuente de pecado, analizaré por qué era considerado el más terrible de los enemigos del cristiano, incluso por encima del Diablo.
%X The purpose of this work is to correlate texts and images from the 16th-century New Spanish, whose thematic axis is the stern condemnation of activities conceptualized as carnal sins. To achieve this, I will analyze the concept of sin from the perspective of 16th-century texts, such as doctrines and catechisms, along with documentary sources closely related to images of indigenous Christian art in which there are abundant visual representations condemning the sins of the flesh, mainly lust and sodomy, activities that were punished with the most dreadful fate: the torments of hell. I will discuss the importance the church placed on the body as a source of sin and explore why it was considered the most terrible enemy of the Christian, even above the Devil.
