Abstract
In this article, the author pretends to establish, through the book Dune by Frank Herbert, that science fiction and fantasy have occupied the place previously reserved to myths, as they offer answers to contemporary human concerns and they shape the new mythology of mass culture society. For this purpose, they inspire themselves in the patterns and archetypes proposed by the Greco-Roman world, making them sites rich in classical reception. Therefore, a theoretical framework is offered to justify this study, which categorizes this work as a paradigmatic example of fantastic science fiction, to later analyze the most relevant classical reception phenomena present in the book. Finally, the author reflects on the role that these studies play in today’s world.
