Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyse three omens of power (omina imperii) from the life of the emperor Hadrian, which occurred just before his accession to power (117 AD), in order to explore their particularities, as well as to highlight the role that such stories play from a political, ideological and propagandistic perspective, and which prove the instrumentalisation exercised by the imperial power of this type of semantic constructions, which are far from being mere anecdotes transmitted by the sources. We will argue here for the existence of two ominal groups in Hadrian's life, collected in the sources, whose narratives are adjusted to the legitimising and justifying needs of Hadrian's rise to power, and which are defined according to the different contexts and the different stages of his life.
