Product of thegoldsmith workshops in Plaermo in the mid-17th century, it is the reliquary urn of Saints Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino housed in the Mother Church of San Fratello (Messina). Created during the height of the Tridentine era, the work was commissioned by the local establishment, specifically by Baron Don Gaspare Lucchese and Filangeri Spatafora Larcan, the archpriest, the vicar, as well as other emerging figures of the Messina region, such as governors, jurors, captains, and notaries. The reliquary of these patrician saints, previously unknown in the history of the island, represents a transitional artifact between the most sumptuous Sicilian Baroque urns, decorated with images and culminating with a miniature figure of the saint, executed on multiple levels and designed by painters and architects, and the more modest, parallelepiped-shaped urns, characterized by a lively late Baroque decorative motif. Thus, the characteristics of the better- known Sicilian urns from the 17th to the 18th century are highlighted, outlining their compositional and formal evolution.
