Proyecto de Investigación Strangford Lough sea Defences Environmental Monitoring Program (AS/5061/CMR 10.6.98). The Rivers Agency. Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Northern Ireland.
This chapter examines the environmental setting and management challenges of Strangford Lough, one of the most significant sea inlets in the British Isles. It outlines the geomorphological and tidal characteristics of the lough and describes an intensive monitoring programme established to generate baseline data on the physical and biological environment of the tidal flats at Newtownards, Co. Down. High-precision measurements of topography, sediments, water levels, climatic variables, and wave activity were used to characterise geomorphological dynamics and to support informed coastal management decisions. The book as a whole provides a comprehensive overview of the diverse coastal environments of Northern Ireland, highlighting key geological features, the impact of human activity, and the research conducted at the University of Ulster. It details the region’s unique coastal formations, including estuaries, rocky shore platforms, and the iconic Giant’s Causeway (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and emphasizes the integration of scientific research, environmental management, and education in the coastal sciences.
