Abstract
This article examines a sculptural representation of the Immaculate Virgin carved in elephant ivory. The study focuses on its historical and aesthetic characteristics, as well as its provenance. As an innovative contribution to this type of art-historical research, the morphological properties of the material used to create the piece are analysed. Due to its unique qualities, ivory was typically reserved for highly specific works, several of which are examined here in order to identify stylistic influences and reference models. Building upon previous documentary evidence that raises questions regarding authorship—whether José Gambino or his uncle Giuseppe Gambino—this research also includes an analysis of the sculpture’s style, the artists’ biographies, and the origin of the work, ultimately achieving a definitive identification of the artist responsible.
