Arrieros somos: camino real y arriería entre Oaxaca y el reino de Guatemala (1680-1740)

Abstract

Este trabajo es un análisis de la arriería en el contexto de la Carrera de Guatemala, el circuito de comercio que vinculó a Nueva España y Guatemala en el período de 1680 y 1740, una línea de investigación pendiente en la historiografía americanista. Se identificó el camino real señalando sus características geográficas extrayendo información que devela el trasfondo socioeconómico de la arriería. Las fuentes fueron los relatos de viajeros contemporáneos que transitaron en Oaxaca entre los siglos XVIII y XIX, expedientes judiciales y protocolos notariales de Oaxaca y Guatemala. La investigación demostró como la geografía y el clima, condicionaron a la arriería. Por otra parte, se hizo una aproximación a los cálculos que permiten cuantificar los fletes pagados por las mercancías trasegadas. Se puntualizaron factores sociales como la división social del trabajo en la arriería y el origen geográfico de los arrieros.

This work is an analysis of the muleteer in the context of the Guatemalan Race, the trade circuit that linked New Spain and Guatemala in the period between 1680 and 1740. The objective is to analyze the muleteer as a historiographical problem. The royal road was identified by pointing out its geographical characteristics, extracting information that reveals the socioeconomic background of the muleteering. The sources were the accounts of contemporary travelers who transited in Oaxaca between the 18th and 19th centuries, judicial files and notarial protocols from Oaxaca and Guatemala. The investigation demonstrated how geography and climate conditioned the muleteering. On the other hand, an approximation was made to the calculations that allow to quantify thefreight paid for the merchandise transferred. Social factors such as the social division of labor in the muleteering and the geographical origin of the muleteers were pointed out.
