Abstract
In São Tomé and Príncipe, poverty and extreme poverty rates are high. On the other hand, the country has a higher rate of social inequality than countries with similar GDPs. From this perspective, given the poverty situation in which the population of São Tomé and Príncipe lives, this work has sought to demonstrate that it is possible to improve the lives of the country's impoverished population. However, for this to happen, according to Marx and other authors from the Marxist tradition, it is necessary to abandon doctrines that are merely abstract, unrealistic and contemplative of reality, since they do not lead to a real and effective transformation of the lives of the population. We need to have a materialist view of reality and go beyond ideas.
