Abstract
Marian effigies have been dressed and jeweled by popular devotion throughout the centuries. This article intends to underline the artistic and conceptual relevance acquired by a purely Marian jewel such as the rostrillo. To achieve this objective, its stylistic evolution is studied through several pieces that belong to different Spanish Marian images. It is complemented by the analysis of a drawing that it preserved in the National Library of Spain, which represents an anonymous design of this singular jewel.
