Abstract
The Simbolica Descriptio engraving (Zborowski, Roma, 1609, Iacobus Laurus) is part of the Álbum de Grabados from the Fondo Antiguo de la Biblioteca Nacional in Mexico City. It presents iconographic elements and biblical quotes referring to the Creation (Genesis 1:1-23), and the Flood myth (Genesis 7:10-18); as well as mystic visions of Santa Teresa de Ávila and San Juan de la Cruz which relate to the idea of spiritual marriage. These characteristics, linked to zoological and vegetal emblems, suggest the possibility of an alchemical reading of the engraving. This reading of the image also allows for an explanation of the use and presence of the figure in the Jesuit College of Arts of Saint Pedro and Saint Pablo in Mexico City during the 18th century.
