Legacy Wood Configuring a Periodic Table for Identifying the Timber Species and Dating of Galleon-Era Philippine Wooden Artifacts

Abstract

A periodic table was configured to aid in identifying the timber species and dating Philippine-made wooden artifacts carved during the galleon era. This graphical representation plots the legacy wood identified from extant dated ecclesiastical woodcarvings at San Agustín Church against the Hispanic period from the latter half of the 16th century until the end of the 19th century. Three case studies and other galleon-era objects that crossed the Pacific demonstrated the validity of this periodic table. This paper underscores the Filipino view on the most appropriate timber materials for creating outstanding wooden artifacts that define its legacy during the Hispanic colonial period.

Se configuró una tabla periódica para ayudar a identificar las especies de madera y datar los artefactos de madera de fabricación filipina tallados durante la época de los galeones. Esta representación gráfica coteja la madera heredada identificada a partir de tallas eclesiásticas fechadas existentes en la iglesia de San Agustín con el periodo hispánico comprendido entre la segunda mitad del sigloXVI y finales del siglo XIX. Tres estudios de casos y otros objetos de la época de los galeones que cruzaron el Pacífico demostraron la validez de esta tabla periódica. Este trabajo subraya el punto de vista filipino sobre los materiales madereros más apropiados para crear artefactos de madera sobresalientes que definen su legado durante el periodo colonial hispano.
