Abstract
The overrepresentation of Afro-Ecuadorians from the Chota Valley in Ecua-dorian soccer responds to the historical racial construction of the popula-tion as apt for sports and bodily activities, and as less intelligent and there-fore, denied opportunities in spaces considered white. However, soccer, as a natural space for Afro-Ecuadorians, does not respond to the population’s expectations of economic mobility, rather, it can be considered an artifact of widening inequality gaps.
