Abstract
The "Abduction of Europa" is a mythical story that was reclaimed by classical authors and depicted in different ways in many masterpieces since ancient times. The Abduction provided a new image of the European continent, thanks to allegories found on the covers of atlases and cosmographies from the 15th century on. The allegory not only reached Europe but other continents as well; for this reason, the aim of this paper is to compare the baroque depictions of European and American allegories, in order to highlight their similarities and differences and, most importantly, unveil Europeans visions of the disturbing and surprising New World.
