'Las Benditas Ánimas del Purgatorio'. Prácticas y materialidades en una cofradía de indios en Omaguaca en el siglo XVII

Abstract

El presente trabajo pretende contribuir al conocimiento de la participación indígena en una cofradía de indios instituida bajo la advocación de "las Benditas Ánimas del Purgatorio", situada en el pueblo de Omaguaca, jurisdicción del Tucumán, durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII. A partir del abordaje cualitativo de las actas de la cofradía y otras fuentes de archivo, intentamos reconstruir las prácticas religiosas, políticas, económicas y sociales la institución, las que creemos evidencian posibles mecanismos de interacción, resistencia y negociación utilizados por los indígenas para adaptarse al contexto colonial de dominación, confiriéndole así a la institución un rol distintivo y activo dentro de la flexibilidad del sistema colonial. Asimismo, consideramos que las significaciones andinas relacionadas con el culto a los ancestros y muertos pudieron encontrar en la advocación elegida el conducto permitido para ajustarse a la realidad colonial a través de la reelaboración de elementos propios de su religiosidad y cultura.The present work aims to contribute to the knowledge of indigenous participation in a brotherhood of Indians instituted under the invocation of "the Blessed Souls of Purgatory" located in the town of Omaguaca, jurisdiction of Tucumán, during the second half of the seventeenth century. From the qualitative approach of the acts of the brotherhood and other archival sources, we try to reconstruct the religious, political, economic and social practices of the institution, which we believe show possible mechanisms of interaction, resistance and negotiation used by the indigenous people to adapt to the colonial context of domination, thus giving the institution a distinctive and active role within the flexibility of the colonial system. Likewise, we believe that the Andean meanings related to the cult of the ancestors and dead, could find in the chosen invocation the conduit allowed to adjust to the colonial reality through the reworking of elements of their religiosity and culture.
