Ovunque Roma? Le feste gesuite per la canonizzazione del 1622 in uno scenario globale.

Abstract

Roma, 12 Marzo 1622. Ignazio da Loyola e Francesco Saverio sono canonizzati da Gregorio XV: è un grande trionfo della cattolicità nel mezzo delle dispute confessionali in Europa. L'indomani delle grandi celebrazioni romane, i gesuiti festeggiano i primi santi dell'ordine in tutte le dimore sparse nelle Assistenze europee, in Asia e nelle Americhe, secondo le possibilità materiali e finanziarie proprie a ogni casa. Come considerare queste solennità, un'eco delle feste che si svolsero a Roma, oppure prevalgono le peculiarità locali? Com'è inoltre rappresentata in queste feste la relazione tra i gesuiti e le autorità locali? Sono diverse le questioni che queste solennità portano alla luce. Le loro ricche relazioni che hanno attirato ancora poco l'interesse dei ricercatori, permettono una riflessione rinnovata sulla definizione del binomio centro-periferia. Il nostro studio si limiterà a sottolineare l'ampiezza del fenomeno al fine di incoraggiare gli studi, attraverso la doppia prospettiva locale e globale che emerge nella visione universale della Compagnia di Gesù.

Rome, March 12, 1622: Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier are canonized by Gregory XV; it is a great triumph for the Catholic Church in the midst of confessional disputes in Europe. The day after the Roman celebrations, the Jesuits celebrate the first saints of their Society in their houses throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, according to the material and financial means of each house. Can we consider these solemnities an echo of the feasts that took place in Rome, or do local peculiarities prevail? How is the relationship between the Jesuits and the local authorities represented in these solemnities? There are several questions that these solemnities bring to light. Their rich relationships, which have attracted little interest from researchers, allow for a renewed reflection on the definition of centre-periphery relations. Our research will outline the amplitude of the phenomenon in order to encourage further studies, through a double perspective (both local and global) that emerges from the Jesuit worldview.
