Abstract
This paper examines the cult of the priests and their devotion to the Lady of Sorrows in the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Spain from the 17th to the19th century. The main focus will be the representations of the virgin in painting and sculpture, as well as the books written and published by their members during this time period. Additionally, there’s an analysis of the Virgen de los Dolores canvas, attributed to Nicolas Enriquez, with the intention to point out the characteristics of the sculptural image portrayed. Furthermore, other similar representations of the venerated image at the entrance of the Oratory are compiled. Through four different works, we explore the dissemination of this carved representation of the Lady of Sorrows inside and outside of New Spain, with special attention in Puebla de los Angeles and Manila.
