Juana de Saavedra Ramírez y las artes en el Madrid de los Austrias

Abstract

Juana de Saavedra Ramírez, hija menor de Fernando Arias de Saavedra y Beatriz Ramírez de Mendoza, es una figura interesantísima que permaneció a la sombra de otra gran mujer, su madre, la IV condesa de Castellar. Ambas se retiraron de la corte española y fundaron el monasterio del Corpus Christi de Madrid para vivir juntas y alejadas de las amenazas del duque de Lerma. El nuevo cenobio se embelleció con numerosas obras de arte, labor de mecenazgo iniciada por Beatriz y continuada por sor Juana, priora perpetua y notable promotora de significativas piezas artísticas que se conservan en aquel convento conocido bajo el seudónimo de “las Carboneras”. En el presente trabajo centramos nuestra atención en la biografía de aquella noble fémina y su faceta como superiora, escritora y mecenas de las artes durante la primera mitad del siglo XVII.

Juana de Saavedra Ramirez, youngest daughter of Fernando Arias de Saavedra and Beatriz Ramirez de Mendoza, is a very interesting figure who remained in the shadow of another great woman, her mother, the IV Countess of Castellar. Both retired from the Spanish court and founded the convent of Corpus Christi in Madrid to live together and away from the threats of the Duke of Lerma. The new monastery was embellished with numerous works of art, a patronage initiated by Beatriz and continued by Sister Juana, perpetual prioress and notable promoter of interesting artistic pieces that are conserved in that convent known under the pseudonym of “las Carboneras”. In the present work we focus our attention on the biography of that noble woman and her facet as superior, writer and patron of the arts during the first half of the 17th century.
