“Meu caro amigo”: a correspondência entre Robert Smith e Gilberto Ferrez

Abstract

A través del análisis de la correspondencia entre Robert Smith y Gilberto Ferrez, intentamos comprender la participación de Smith en la producción del coleccionista e historiador brasileño Gilberto Ferrez en las décadas de 1959 y 1960. La asociación entre los dos intelectuales arrojó importantes re- sultados en el estudio de la iconografía brasileña, especialmente en relación con la obra de artistas viajeros y pioneros de la fotografía en el siglo XIX. La fructífera interlocución entre ambos sobre el trabajo con material iconográfico resulta ser un ejemplo de la importancia de las redes de amistad y los intereses comunes para la investigación histórica.

Through the analysis of the correspondence between Robert Smith and Gilberto Ferrez, we try to understand Smith’s participation in the production of the Brazilian collector and historian Gilberto Ferrez in the 1950s and 1960s. The partnership between the two intellectuals yielded important results in the study of Brazilian iconography, especially in relation to the work of traveling artist and pioneers of photography in the 19th century. The fruitful interlocution between the two while working with iconographic material proves to be an example of the importance of friendship networks and common interests for historical research.
